Everybody.Blogs.It is closing
After the Daveless week I'm closing this site, Dave is back and getting better.
The site has been running off an old PC with just Radio and some glue to get posts from several rss feeds, from a set of comments and from e-mail messages. Now Dave is back and I can revert the computer to its original use. Of course, the site will remain availble forever .
Thank you to everybody.

Dave, Even in sickness, you are a master of how to turn the web's eyes to the news that matters to you. You are one of a kind, and your temporary absence shows what a contribution you make with your daily thoughts and links. Get well soon.

Quitting smoking was and remains one of the hardest things I have done in my life. It is also what got me started blogging. I'll see if I can find some of my first blogs to send your way. What saved my a$$ from lighting up another cigarette during the first 90 days was a site called http://www.quitnet.com/. Highly recommended. Tim "332 days, 1 hour, 13 minutes and 37 seconds smoke free" Bishop

Ok, after the 16th I started to worry. After the 20th the withdrawal symptoms kicked in. I tried everything, super-refresh, dumping my cache, firing up a different browser, deleting all my cookies in case I was being punished for hitting refresh too often. Nothing worked. Then I fed Google ("Where is Dave Winer?") and I had my answer. Get well soon and hurry back to us. We need your insight. Nigel Rowe • 6/21/02; 9:31:21 AM

One of the lovely things about Darwin's evolution: we are each and every one of us unique in all the world. Some of us find or carve a niche that fits us to a tee, and there is joy and satisfaction in that. A rare few individuals see the fabric of evolution and build on it to the betterment of the commons. Gee, it's been three days. It must be serious; we're all wondering how he's feeling.
Paolo V. and others have mentioned that Dave Winer, founder of the superb Radio Userland, is ill and hospitalized for a week. We sent him a get well card here and there's a joint blog where people can send their newsfeed for the purpose of sending get wells to Dave
Our dog, Dao (meaning 'The Way" in Chinese) is a therapy dog and recovering himself from his second total hip replacement in April. He has five more weeks to go before he can walk up stairs or run. So, Dave, we know it's tough to be in the hospital for a week.... get well soon

The Wolff Family Prescription: Tape two aspirin to your forehead, rub chicken soup into your chest, take a slow deep breath, and hum a happy tune (maybe Touch of Gray). Day 4. Is this the longest time without a Scripting News update? You can hear blogspace going through a combination of shock, withdrawal, and anxiety. Is Dave real? The last time I became so concerned about an online personality becoming sick, the person turned out to be a hoax. How do we know Dave exists? Oh, yeah; I met Dave! Sorry to hear you're getting an intimate tour the U.S. healthcare
system as a patient. Doug and I are wishing you nothing but the best
of wishes to get well soon and take care of yourself.
Dr. Doug says to tell you, if you need a clinical pharmacist's
opinion-- he's here.
The place is kinda lonely without you. But we'll try to do you proud
while you get some rest.

This sucks. I've met him at MacWorld San Francisco a number of times, standing in his booth, and I was always impressed by the way he tried to remember who I was. Not that he did; anyone who can remember everyone who walked into their booth a year ago has Too Many Neurons storing trivia. But he would see my UW name tag, smile, and do his best to pry out where we had last me. as though he felt that he should be able to remember everyone he'd ever met, as though it was a serious fault that he wasn't placing my face instantly. Thanks, and my thoughts are with you.

They don't know why, but the numbers are climbing. - Dave's hospital webcam gets slashdotted.- The methadone clinic down the hall tries Radio, finds it too addictive, and puts it on the controlled substance list. - John Robb buys key man insurance. - John starts a contest for guest blogger on Scripting news. From one Jew to another -- the prayer for healing in Hebrew is "El na r'fa na la." These words were cried out by Moses when his sister Miriam was struck with a horrible disease. It's the simplest -- and most effective -- Hebrew prayer on the planet. "El na r'fa na la."If I knew which hospital you were at, I'd be sending some matzo ball soup from Kaufman's here in Chicago to your hospital bed right now, Dave. Namaste and shalom, amigo.

Dave,I've enjoyed your insight and humor. I trust that you will be able to apply these attributes to the struggles you currently face. I've often wondered how you could keep up the pace of running Userland, developing great software, and keeping us informed and inspired. Take the time to recover fully. I'll miss you, but wouldn't want to have you rush back before you are ready. My prayers and best wishes are with you. Whatever caused you to check in to the hospital, I hope it passes quickly with no long term effects.

Paolo, Jenny, and Dane have set up a multi author weblog called "Dave Winer's get well card." To participate either post a comment to my original post (it will automatically route to the get well blog) or create a Dave category on your weblog and send Paolo the URL for the RSS feed.
Here is my recommdation: If you want to just send a short text note, then to post it to my comments section (as described above). If you want to do something more elaborate, with graphics, build a category, make the post, and send Paolo the feed location.
Here's Paolo's original post on the idea.
For my part, I will post new information both to my weblog and to the get well card via categories/rss. Thanks.

Dave:
Get well soon. I'm about to get caught up on all my other email, weblogs
and back reading, and I need Scripting News to distract me!!!
Seriously, seeing that you're in the Hospital for a week worries me. I
think you probably need spicy noodles and some chicken soup. Let us NY
bloggers know, and we'll fedex you some Katz's or 2nd Ave Deli stuff.
Best Wishes, Howard Greenstein

The weekend, it felt so strange, like there was no more news in the world.
Suddently everything was quiet. I thought that you had gone on vaction
Dave, and was hoping you were enjoing the summer. But I find out you are in
the hospital.
We have never met, and might very well never meet. We have bearly exchanged
e-mails. We are not friends, but in a way I feel like I know you - and it
feels like it is one of my friends that are in the hospital right now. I
hope you get better soon, and that you don't waste too much energy on
trying to do more than you really should. And that includes updates on
your weblogs. The world will go round, even if you aren't pushing it :-)
Wishes for a speedy recovery from a guy in Norway you have never met, and
bearly exchanged e-mails with - but that still cares and hopes for the best
for you.
